Happy new week people.
Today we are talking about reviewing. We are now in the last month of the year and as I said in the last entry, this is a good time to take stock. In this newsletter, I lay out a framework for assessing your year. I get asked about this frequently so I hope this helps. Go through it and of course, let me know how it works.
First things first, begin your year-end review by finding a quiet and comfortable space where you can focus without distractions. Bring along a journal, your favourite beverage, and perhaps some soothing background music. Creating a positive environment will set the tone for introspection and self-discovery. Don’t just rush into it, take time to ensure you are ready to go.
Here is a list you can follow
1. Review Your Goals (Assuming you set them)
Once you have done this, you start by revisiting the goals you set at the beginning of the year. Identify which ones you achieved, which are in progress, and which may need to be carried over into the next year.
Celebrate your successes, no matter how small, and acknowledge the effort you put into pursuing your objectives. This will create the right environment for you to set SMART goals for the next year.
2. Assess Personal and Professional Growth:
Reflect on your personal and professional development throughout the year. Consider the skills you've acquired, the challenges you've overcome, and how your mindset has evolved.
This assessment provides valuable insights into your strengths and areas for improvement. Be honest with yourself. The sooner you can tell you aren’t growing, the quicker you can change course and begin to channel a new path to growth
3. Document Key Achievements and Milestones:
Take time to jot down your major achievements and milestones. Whether it's a career accomplishment, personal triumph, or a new skill mastered, noting these successes will boost your confidence and remind you of your capabilities.
I once struggled with this, I would never acknowledge key achievements because I was never a celebration person. If you are like me, realise that you aren’t a very good coach. Recognise good behaviour so you are incentivised to produce more of that behaviour
4. Evaluate Challenges and Setbacks
Acknowledge the challenges and setbacks you faced. Instead of dwelling on failures, view them as opportunities to learn and grow. Identify the lessons you can extract from these experiences and how they can contribute to your resilience and adaptability.
5. Assess Health and Well-being:
Consider your physical and mental well-being. Reflect on your health habits, self-care practices, and stress management techniques. If there are areas that need improvement, outline actionable steps to prioritize your health in the coming year.
6. Review Relationships:
Assess the relationships in your life – family, friends, colleagues. Identify those that have positively impacted you and consider how you can nurture and strengthen these connections.
Reflect on any toxic relationships and evaluate whether they need boundaries or distance. Be courageous and bold about this one because it can be difficult.
7. Gratitude Practice:
Cultivate gratitude by listing things you're thankful for this year. Gratitude can shift your focus from what's lacking to what you've been blessed with, fostering a positive mindset and appreciation for life's blessings.
8. Set Realistic Goals for the Next Year:
Armed with insights from your review, set realistic and achievable goals for the upcoming year. Break them down into actionable steps and timelines. Having a roadmap will give you direction and purpose as you embark on the next phase of your journey.
9. Celebrate and Treat Yourself:
Finally, celebrate the year's successes and treat yourself to something special. Whether it's a small indulgence, a day off, or a moment of quiet reflection, acknowledging your efforts and accomplishments is crucial for maintaining motivation and a positive outlook.
Again, you are doing this because you want to incentivise good behaviour.
I hope you enjoyed this and I hope you find it helpful
Have a great week
