The Three Cardinal Rules for a Sustainable Life
Good Morning people,
In a world where the pressure to “hustle” and “grind” dominates, we often lose sight of what it takes to build a life that lasts. The iconic actor and storyteller, Andre De Shields shared timeless wisdom in his Tony Awards speech that cuts through the noise. His “Three Cardinal Rules of Sustainability and Longevity” is a masterclass in thriving, not just surviving.
Rule 1: Surround Yourself with People Whose Eyes Light Up When They See You
I live in an industry of transitional relationships. I know all to well the endless networking events and surface-level relationships we build in a desperate desire to get ahead. I want to remind us all of the power of genuine connection. Seek out people who truly celebrate you—not for what you can do for them, but for who you are. These are the relationships that fuel your energy, provide grounding, and help you weather life’s storms.
Ask yourself: Who brings light into my life? Invest in those connections.
Rule 2: Slowly is the Fastest Way to Get to Where You Want to Be
It’s tempting to rush towards our goals, chasing success at breakneck speed. But true sustainability lies in pacing yourself. Great things take time—whether it’s building a career, cultivating relationships, or mastering a craft.
When you feel impatient or frustrated, remember that slow and steady progress often outlasts quick wins. Life isn’t a sprint; it’s a marathon.
This has been a hard lesson for me to learn but I’m learning now to go at the pace of grace.
Rule 3: The Top of One Mountain Is the Bottom of the Next, So Keep Climbing
Success is not a destination; it’s a journey. Each milestone you achieve isn’t an endpoint but a starting point for the next challenge. The beauty of this rule lies in its humility. It encourages us to embrace lifelong growth and to view every “ending” as a chance to begin again.
As you reach new heights, stay curious and open to what lies ahead. There’s always another mountain to climb.
Applying the Rules in Your Own Life
This week, reflect on these three principles. Who do you need to spend more time with? Where do you need to slow down? And how can you embrace the next climb with grace and determination?
Longevity isn’t just about lasting; it’s about thriving. By living intentionally and embracing these rules, you set the foundation for a life that isn’t just successful but deeply fulfilling.
Here’s to a sustainable and purposeful journey.
